Learning Outcomes

At the end of Module #4, students will be able to:

  • Determine how content from social media sources may be used in academic work.
  • Incorporate ethical considerations into the choice of using social media

Where's the party?

Human beings are social animals.  We need contact with other humans - it's part of our basic nature.  Each time we interect, personal exchanges occur that build a database of experiences that we draw on to interpret the next interaction.

With social media, users create content -- status updates, collections of links, pictures, videos -- that functions as an information resource. The content allows us to draw on other people's experience, not just our own.  Sometimes these information resources can be used for academic work, and sometimes they can't. 

In our interactions with other people at the personal level, we make judgements and form opinions.  We need to do the same when we use social content in academia.

This module of the tutorial looks at social media from the perspective of using that information in academic work.  This isn't a discussion of student use of social media in support of class interactions.
