Directories are listings of organizations or individuals.

  • Guidestar: The premier proprietary source for operation and financial information on U.S. nonprofit organizations.  Provides basic information for over 850,000 nonprofits, including access to Pdf's of the organization's IRS Form 990. Can be searched by location, function and income. 
  • Charitable Choices: Information on 300+ charities that have met the accountability standards of the Federal Government's charity drive.
  • BBB Wise Giving Alliance at
  • Charity NavigatorProvides "an unbiased, objective, numbers-based rating system to assess the financial health of over 5,000 of America's best-known charities. Specifically, Charity Navigator's rating system examines two broad areas of a charity's financial health -- how responsibly it functions day to day as well as how well positioned it is to sustain its programs over time."   • List of organizations and volunteer opportunities plus general information on the nonprofit sector.  Displays mission statements in search results. Comprehensive Nonprofit FAQ.
  • American Institute of Philanthropy: "GOALS:To research and evaluate the efficiency, accountability and governance of nonprofit organizations; to educate the public about the importance of wise giving; to inform the public of wasteful or unethical practices of nonprofits and provide recognition to highly effective and ethical charities;"(from web site)


National Center for Charitable StatisticsServes as "the national repository of data on the nonprofit sector in the United States. Its mission is to develop and disseminate high quality data on nonprofit organizations and their activities for use in research on the relationships between the nonprofit sector, government, the commercial sector, and the broader civil society." (from web site) Includes data plus Form 990's and general background on the nonprofit sector of the economy.

Background and Overview

  • Compiles government resources about grants, loans, assisstance, taxes, management, and other topics related to nonprofits.  Links to external government-related sites and divides information by state where appropriate.
  • Independent Sector: Provides PDFs of documents related to nonprofits in the areas of accountability, giving and volunteering, and communications and outreach.  Documents are of varying currency, but the older ones remain relevant.  Also check out the Independent Sector's videos, webinars, and general reference information about nonprofit-related issues.
