The USM team was invited to share about their CIC project at the 2015 Consortium for Digital Teaching and Learning on September 10, 2015 in Washington D.C. Dr. Kyle Anthony, Danielle Dion, and Lindsay Schettler shared the following presentation and resources.
The University of Saint Mary was one of 42 colleges nationwide selected by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) to be a member of the Consortium on Digital Resources for Teaching and Research.
Through the use of Shared Shelf, a cloud-based uniform digital platform for cataloging, member colleges will be able to store, preserve, and share hidden or lesser-known collections. Digital images, documents, audio and video files, and other types of materials will be more easily searchable—improving teaching and learning, enriching faculty and student research, and streamlining administrative capabilities.
“Along with our students and faculty having access to historic collections at universities across the country, Saint Mary will digitize our impressive Bernard H. Hall Abraham Lincoln Collection and Sir John and Mary Craig Scripture Collection,” said Dr. Bryan Le Beau, provost and vice president of academic affairs. “The Consortium makes sharing our over 10,000 items, including our original copy of the 13th Amendment, with academic communities possible.”
The Consortium is funded by a $2.2 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation—subsidizing three years of use of Shared Shelf and support workshops for faculty, staff, and librarians. Implementation training begins this September in Washington, D.C. for staff members and librarians from each member university. “This is exciting for us,” said Danielle Dion, director of USM’s De Paul Library. “The grant allows us to create a digital repository and will enable us to establish connections and build partnerships with other institutions that have similar collections.”
