Front Desk Tasks: Maintaining Our Space

So, you work at the library front desk. What is it that you do there?

Keepers of the Commons

As KLC Student Assistants, one of your primary responsibilities is to help the professional staff keep the building and the systems within it running smoothly so we can better serve the larger USM community.

We strive to create an atmosphere that is clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The tasks on the following lists help us maintain the building throughout the day.

If anything happens outside the normal tasks, like large food spills, etc. please report these issues to professional staff immediately. We'll contact campus housekeeping or maintenance so we can monitor any needed follow-up.

Task Checklist

  • Check clipboard for special tasks
  • Check in items, tidy desk
  • Check printers, refill paper
  • Check staplers, refill staples
  • Sound check (conversational, not loud)
  • Tidy furniture (see floorplan)
  • Pick up stray items, books, etc.
  • Call Public Safety to pick up lost & found items
  • Check all laptops plugged in and charging
  • Check sinks for dishes/wipe out sinks with paper towels
  • Make sure all lights are on/Temperatures set to building standard
  • Clear the desk of items and leave clear notes as needed
