Emergencies for Student Workers: Violence & Crime

Your Role: Call for Help

In any of the following situations, your primary responsibility is your own safety. You will not get in any kind of trouble for calling help you deem appropriate to the situation.

If someone or something is questionable or makes you uneasy, contact your supervisor and/or Campus Safety: 913-683-5201. You can also text Campus Safety using this number.

If you are afraid for your or someone else's safety, call 911.

Threats of Violence

Threats of violence are taken seriously. If you believe you are in a potentially violent situation:

  • Leave the area if you can.
  • Call 911 and/or Campus Security if you can.
  • Maintain a safe distance.
  • Stand behind a barrier.
  • Give yourself an out, like, "I need to use the restroom." or another task that will remove you from the situation, where you can call for help.

Criminal Behavior

If you believe you are witnessing or have witnessed a crime, follow these steps:

  • Get to a safe place. DO NOT approach the crime or attempt to intervene.
  • Call 911 and/or Campus Security.
  • Be prepared to describe:
    • Nature of the incident and if the incident is still in progress.
    • Location.
    • Description of person(s) involved.
    • Weapons involved.
    • Vehicle description & license plate number, if applicable.
    • Direction of travel when last seen.

Intruders/Active Shooters

In an intruder or active shooter situation, once again, your only responsibility as a student worker is to your own safety. The following video produced by the Department of Homeland Security and the City of Houston Mayor's Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security is provided as a guideline for current recommendations for personal safety.
